Because our Heavy Industries facility is located on the far edge of town it's an excellent location for our main acoustics lab. The Geek Group Acoustics lab is home to our production company "Mach-1 Productions" and is used not only for research and testing purposes, but as a fully functional professional audio and visual studio as well. The entire studio facility is specially constructed to be as soundproof as possible. The walls are all multilayered and in most cases well over a foot thick. The facility consists of three rooms, the Control Room, the Airlock, and the Studio. The Airlock is a small room that connects between the main building, the control room, and the studio. The public is allowed into the airlock for observation and tours at any time during normal business hours. There is a large soundproof sliding glass door that makes up one wall of the airlock and allows observation into the control room. There is also a big comfy couch located here that is excellent for an afternoon nap (as the entire room is soundproof). The Airlock and connected facilities are closed to the public after hours and at certain times when recording is in session. The entire area is the most secure in our whole lab because of the value of the equipment contained inside. Private tours are available by request. Please remember when visiting the recording facility that it is considered very bad manners to knock on the door at any time. The people in the control room know you're there as soon as you walk in the airlock door, there is no need to knock. The Control Room is where all of the engineering work for our videos and audio work takes place. This is the home of our massive nonlinear editing suite, our digital audio workstation, our video post production, and all of our audio recording equipment. This is where the magic happens. The Studio is a large high-ceilinged space (the tallest part of the building) with a movable set of panels that allow us to change the shape, sound, and reverberation of the entire room at the push of a button. The Studio is where the objects that we wish to record are actually placed. This can be anything from a local band that wants to record an album, to a turbine engine that we want to make detailed measurements on for a research project. The studio also contains a pair of Isolation Booths. The smaller one is a Vocal booth, used for solo singers, laying vocal tracks, and other small things (the room is slightly larger than a closet). The larger booth is used for cases where we need a massive amount of soundproofing for a large object. It usually houses our large session drum set. Both isolation booths have a Sound Transmission Class of >70 to the control room. |
